As the EU continues to ramp up efforts toward zero-emission mobility, its long-standing Car Labelling Directive is under review. Originally launched to help consumers make greener vehicle choices, the Directive has delivered meaningful results and now it’s poised for a digital transformation.

A Directive with Impact
Since its inception, the EU’s Car Labelling Directive (1999/94/EC) has provided consistent and transparent fuel efficiency and CO₂ emission data to car buyers across member states. This initiative has empowered consumers and nudged the automotive market towards cleaner, more efficient vehicles.

A recent evaluation confirmed the Directive’s success: the benefits including more informed buying decisions and alignment with climate goals clearly outweigh the modest costs of implementation.

Despite its achievements, the Directive has room to grow. Printed labels, once the standard, may be joined by digital information tools that are dynamic, accessible, and environmentally friendly. The push for a single, harmonised EU-wide label could also streamline information delivery and foster greater trust and clarity for consumers.

Critically, the next evolution of the Directive may include tailored labelling for battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles a timely move as Europe eyes a zero-emission future.

What’s Next?
As outlined in the Industrial Action Plan for the European Automotive Sector (March 2025), a full review of the Car Labelling Directive is scheduled for 2026. The goal? Support consumers in making sustainable choices while boosting adoption of zero-emission vehicles across the EU.

At Custom Labels Ltd, we welcome these developments. As manufacturing shifts gears to support a greener future, we’re proud to supply the robust labelling solutions that help make it happen.

Custom Labels: Powering Progress with Purpose-Built Labelling Solutions

As Europe’s automotive industry embraces the shift to zero-emission vehicles, the supply chain behind it is evolving just as rapidly. At Custom Labels Ltd, we’re proud to be part of this transformation supplying the durable, high-performance labelling solutions that help keep operations running smoothly in some of the most demanding industrial environments.

Just a short distance from one of the UK’s major high-tech manufacturing sites, our team has spent years developing and refining labelling systems that meet the unique needs of automotive and heavy industry. From our work with Jaguar Land Rover supporting production facilities in both the UK and Slovakia to our ongoing partnerships across the broader manufacturing sector, our focus remains the same: delivering labels that last.

Our UltraTuff asset tags have become a trusted staple on factory floors, engineered to withstand harsh conditions without compromising readability or brand integrity. These labels are more than just functional they’re built to reinforce operational efficiency, ensure seamless asset tracking, and stand up to the wear and tear of real-world use.

As the UK’s electric vehicle sector continues to scale, the need for reliable labelling grows with it. Whether applied to machinery, tooling, vehicles, or battery components, our solutions are designed to endure—offering resistance to chemicals, abrasion, and the environmental pressures of the production line.

At Custom Labels Ltd, we understand that in industries pushing the limits of innovation, every detail matters including the labels that help keep it all on track.
