The UK’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery plant has reached a significant milestone, as the first steel frames have now been erected at the Agratas Gigafactory site in Puriton, near Bridgwater.

Agratas, Tata Group’s global battery business is investing £4bn in transforming the former Royal Ordnance Factory site, just off junction 23 of the M5. Construction is expected to continue over the next two years, with around 500 workers on-site by the end of 2025, increasing to 2,000 by 2026.

This milestone follows extensive groundwork, including the installation of 17,000 piles to stabilise foundations, and marks the beginning of visible progress on the landmark project. The steel structures are being erected in phases, starting at the northern end of the site, with all steel sourced from UK suppliers.

Speaking on the development, Earl Wiggins, Vice President of Manufacturing Operations at Agratas, described the moment as “the start of a new chapter where our vision for a world-leading facility starts to visibly take shape.”

The factory is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to the region, with 1,500 operational jobs created by its 2027 opening, and up to 4,000 roles once the site is fully expanded.

To minimise disruption to local residents, Agratas has also pledged to use sound-reduced equipment, electric machinery where possible, and avoid noisy works such as cutting and grinding on Sundays.

Why This News Matters to Custom Labels Ltd

As a business located less than two miles away from the new Gigafactory, this development is especially relevant to us here at Custom Labels Ltd. With a proven track record supplying durable asset tags for Jaguar Land Rover’s production facilities in both the UK and Slovakia, we understand the rigorous demands of the automotive and advanced manufacturing sectors.

In those projects, we supplied UltraTuff tags a high-performance solution designed for industrial environments. These tags combined:

  • Full-colour logos with exact colour matching
  • Integrated QR codes for seamless scanning and improved operational efficiency
  • Scratch-resistant laminate for long-lasting durability
  • Strong adhesive backing ensuring secure attachment
  • Resistance to chemicals and abrasion, ideal for demanding manufacturing settings

The UltraTuff & our Ultimate tag range remains one of our most reliable products for heavy-duty applications, making it a natural fit for facilities such as the Agratas Gigafactory.

As the Bridgwater site continues to develop, we look forward to the opportunities it will create for the local community and supply chain and we stand ready to provide robust, tailored labelling solutions to support this new era of UK manufacturing.
