More and more these days drivers are being urged think about the journeys they take and its impact on the environment.

In a move to help educate drivers on the benefits of Biofuels, the Department for Transport launched the ‘Know Your Fuel’ campaign. The scheme will be introduced gradually to petrol stations throughout the UK with the new labelling system on petrol and diesel pumps, but all stations should now have these in place at the beginning of September.

The fuel is the same, but the new labels are designed to make sure you choose the correct pump each time. The change is part of the Government’s commitment to end the sale of diesel and petrol cars by 2040 – which is set out in the Road to Zero strategy.

The new labels which will display a letter and number partnering that signifies the type of renewable fuel (Petrol or Diesel) and the percentage of renewable Biofuel it contains. Petrol will be displayed within a circle, the letter E stands for ethanol and 5 means up to five per cent of biofuel ethanol. Diesel will be shown within a square and the letter B for biodiesel. The number 7 depicts that the fuel contains up to seven per cent renewable diesel.

For UK drivers the biodiesel and ethanol increase isn’t something new. Over the last 10 years, these renewable fuels have been added to UK petrol and diesel. They help to reduce the overall carbon emissions and in doing so meet climate change targets. Adding biofuels in this way has reduced CO² emissions by the equivalent of taking over 1 million cars off the road.
