As the UK government makes another strong commitment to zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) manufacturing, Custom Labels Ltd have continued to invest in its state of the art printing facilities to support the future of electric mobility.
With the unveiling of DRIVE35, the UK government has signalled a major shift in the nation’s automotive strategy. This landmark £2 billion initiative part of the broader Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan will fund a range of projects designed to accelerate the transition to ZEV manufacturing. A further £500 million earmarked for R&D until 2035 brings the total commitment to an impressive £2.5 billion.
The scale and scope of DRIVE35 is unprecedented. From start-ups developing next-gen propulsion systems to multi-billion-pound gigafactories as is being built in Bridgwater just 200-yards from our facilities. The initiative has been structured to support a full spectrum of activity across the automotive value chain.
But beyond the headlines and billions, DRIVE35 reflects a growing awareness that the UK must act swiftly to secure its place in the global EV race.
Sector Confidence, Backed by Long-Term Strategy
Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, put it plainly:
“We’re helping British carmakers get to the front of the pack… supporting UK manufacturers to safeguard jobs and secure the future of the sector.”
It’s a sentiment echoed by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), whose Chief Executive Mike Hawes welcomed the long-term vision.
“The importance of a cross-government strategy with specific measures for automotive cannot be understated,” he said. “DRIVE35 has the potential to unlock investment and innovation in the UK, supporting jobs and creating wealth across the country.”
Early signals suggest that the programme is already having a real-world impact. Investment announcements from firms like Astemo in Bolton (£100m for EV component production) and Dana in the West Midlands (£15m for EV drivetrain parts) highlight the regional benefits of the strategy.
A Boost for the UK EV Supply Chain
For businesses working within the EV supply chain, DRIVE35 offers not just funding but long-term certainty. With major initiatives such as the Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) and Connected & Automated Mobility (CAM) programme under its umbrella, DRIVE35 aims to streamline access to capital and innovation grants.
The plan is structured around three pillars:
- Transformation (large-scale capital investment)
- Scale Up Feasibility (early-stage strategic R&D)
- Innovation (collaborative demonstrators and pilot projects)
It’s a strategy that encourages ecosystem-wide growth from Tier 1 suppliers down to specialist manufacturers and service providers.
Where Custom Labels Fits into the EV Equation
Just 200 yards from our Somerset headquarters, a new EV battery technology park is preparing to open. It’s not just a sign of the sector’s rapid expansion it’s a sign that we’re in the right place at the right time.
At Custom Labels, we’ve been developing high-performance labelling and asset tracking solutions for years. Now, we’re ready to meet the specific needs of the EV and ZEV manufacturing sectors.
Asset Labels and Tags for the EV Sector
Our QR code-enabled asset tags allow manufacturers and engineers to track components, log testing and calibration data, and manage lifecycle maintenance an essential tool for EV gigafactories and component suppliers.
Ultra-Durable Graphic Overlays
We also produce bespoke fascia labels and overlays for EV chargers, power units, and in-vehicle components. Engineered to endure extreme conditions, these labels ensure clarity and durability in demanding environments.
Compliance and Traceability
In a highly regulated, fast-evolving market, traceability matters. Our labels help manufacturers meet compliance requirements while maintaining production efficiency.
