In a significant move to bolster the UK automotive sector amidst global economic pressures, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced new measures to accelerate the industry’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs).
Facing rising global tensions and economic challenges—exacerbated by the United States imposing a 25% tariff on imported vehicles—manufacturers across the UK are feeling the strain. Jaguar Land Rover, one of the nation’s most iconic luxury carmakers, has already announced a temporary halt to US shipments this April as it assesses the impact of these new trading terms.
To support the sector, the UK Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, while allowing hybrid vehicles to be sold until 2035. Smaller manufacturers will benefit from exemptions under the revised legislation.
Crucially, the government is also providing greater flexibility for carmakers to meet the EV transition targets. Under the updated rules, manufacturers who fall short of annual EV production goals up to 2026 will have the opportunity to make up the difference before the final 2030 deadline. This is part of a wider £2.3 billion investment aimed at scaling EV production and fostering innovation in the industry.
