The SGC 250 a ring-based heavy lift crane boasting a maximum lifting moment of 250,000 tonne/metres was christened ‘Big Carl’ at Sarens’ manufacturing facility in Belgium in November 2018.

Once delivery of the crane has been finalised it will undertake heavy-duty lifting tasks during the new power plant’s construction. To make the delivery of the crane possible the unit was divided into modules and shipped to Avonmouth Dock. It will then be stored at the port until making its short onward journey to the construction site in Somerset.

Bristol Port has invested in its own new cranes to allow them to meet the demands of the Hinkley Point C development.

The SGC 250 will be mobilised to the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant project, where it will operate at the plant for at least 4 years. The crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 5,000 tonnes. The main boom, measuring up to 160m long, can be supplemented with a 100m long, heavy duty jib.

“In absolute technical terms, it is, at this point in time, the largest crane in the world in terms of size and capacity.” said Wim Sarens.
