Costa Coffee was bought by Coca Cola last week from Whitbread in a deal worth 3.9bn. Whitbread had plans in place to spin off the chain as a separate entity, but the price received from Coca Cola was deemed to be far higher than if Costa had been demerged into a stand-alone company on the stock market.
Whitbread will now look to focus their efforts on its Premier Inn business in the UK and Germany. Money from the sale would be used to expand the Premier Inn chain, return some cash to shareholders, pay down debt and boost the pension fund.
Whitbread bought Costa in 1995 for just £19m. At the time Costa had 39 UK outlets. The company now boasts 2,400 UK outlets as well as an additional 1,400 in 31 overseas markets. Costa Coffee is currently the largest UK coffee chain in the UK and the worlds second largest. It will now look to triple its presence in China, where it is second only to Starbucks.
