A major infrastructure project is underway just two miles from Custom Labels Ltd, where the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) sector is gearing up for expansion. A new 4.5-kilometre (2.8-mile) water main is set to be installed, linking Knowle Hill Reservoir at Bawdrip to the cutting-edge electric car battery factory under construction at Woolavington.

The project, spearheaded by Wessex Water, comes following a request from Agratas to ensure that Building One of the Gigafactory – currently in development – has a dedicated water supply. A Screening Opinion Request has been submitted to Somerset Council to initiate the process.

The planned pipeline route runs through agricultural land and crosses Woolavington Road. Planning documents reveal that “a section of water main will be installed from Woolavington Road to a connection point of a utilities corridor in the South East of the This is Gravity Ltd development site.”

The majority of the water main installation will use directional drilling to minimize surface disruption, while smaller sections will be completed using open cut methods. Wessex Water is also planning a 500-metre extension of rising main sewer from the east of Puriton.

In addition, This is Gravity Ltd will install 600 metres of water main within the internal utilities corridor at the development site. Work is scheduled to begin in spring/summer 2025 and expected to last around 12 weeks. However, the timeline for the connection between Woolavington Road and the utilities corridor remains unconfirmed.

Environmental impact reports show that Wessex Water has flagged “a medium risk of soil/water contamination for the water main installation,” due to “oily residue… observed in one of the fields during the site walkover.” Further investigation is planned to assess and mitigate these risks.
