The government has announced that as of July 24th it will be a requirement for the public to wear face coverings in shops. Anyone who does not adhere to this rule will face a fine of up to £100.
Top Scientists have criticised the previous action on this, and Boris Johnson has now been forced to act, as he tries to prevent a second wave of Covid-19. The Prime Minister has called this move a ‘vital insurance policy’ to prevent the explosion of the virus again.
Many other European nations introduced face coverings months ago and the World Health Organisation changed its guidance back in June. Environment Secretary George Eustice said that they needed to consider a mix of measures to control the virus. He stated that retailers have gone to great lengths with their employees to help fight the disease and it is not unreasonable to expect the public to do the same. People will then be protecting each other; it is a mutual thing.
Royal Society president Dr Venki Ramakrishnan said “the evidence had shifted, and he is strongly in favour of face coverings in shops. He stated that it was ‘not consistent’ to force people to wear them on public transport and not in shops”.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said “face coverings could increase confidence in people to shop and that the public has a key role to play in helping the nation and the economy recover, whilst also protecting shop workers”.
